I
have two memories of
Chandlersville from my years as
a student in junior high at
Cumberland from 1955-58 when my
father, Clyde H. Larrick, was
principal and executive head of
the school district.
First, the seventh and eighth
grade basketball team played an
away game at Chandlersville
School Gymnasium. I was a
starter as an eighth grader,
basically being a feeder of our
big player, Richard "Moose"
Jordan. The day we played at
Chandlersville, the weather was
cool and the gym was also cool
and lacking in heat. It was very
uncomfortable, for we players
did a lot of running. Still, I
remember the experience with
fondness.
Second, during my junior high
years at Cumberland, I owned a
Deagan #510 Vibraharp and
studied privately with Al "Rags"
Anderson in Columbus at Lazarus
Department Store downtown every
other Saturday, eighty miles
from home. One Saturday my
parents and I drove to Columbus
for a music lesson, then on the
way back home we stopped at
Chandlersville School for a
Talent Show. There was a
jam-packed audience that evening
as I recall, and I played my
keyboard percussion solo and won
a prize, one of three given. I
believe my prize was ten
dollars, which was a lot of
money for me at that time.
My
mother was Gail Geary Larrick,
and she played piano well enough
to play at the Hiramsburg United
Methodist Church when I was
younger. The three of us always
went through Chandlersville on
the way to Zanesville and
Columbus from Cumberland when we
resided in western Noble County
on farms in my youth.
Thus, I still recall these
experiences with Chandlersville
when I read about the town in
the newspaper that is published
in Cambridge.
