Cumberland Vikings Basketball - Viking Enterprises, LLC - Cumberland, Ohio One Returning Letterman Is Hope For Winning Season At Cumberland
Cumberland High Vikings are looking forward to a winning season, the first in several years, if the game's performance of the squad is an indication.

Making its debut last Tuesday, Cumberland encountered little trouble in subduing the Belle Valley Raiders, 64 to 44.

The Outlook just doesn't look too bright fro the number of lettermen returning from last year's squad, but Coach John Duddings left the impression that this year's record would be an improvement over the one last year. The Vikings, under Coach Jim Marks, who moved to New Mexico, won two games last year.

With only one letterman back, Jim Dudley, versatile senior, will undoubtedly carry the load. His initial performance against Belle Valley clearly give evidence of his scoring potential.

However, along with Dudley, added support will be forthcoming from Bob Holbert, senior, who has seen some previous experience. He tallied 21 points in his initial performance against the Raiders from Belle Valley.

Holbert is expected to replace Dick Jordan who was lost to the squad when his family moved to Pleasant City.

Coach John Dudding's predicts that his squad will provide plenty of competition to teams in the Guernsey county league and area.

Three seniors, four juniors and three sophomores will carry the Cumberland colors in the school's 20-game schedule.

Cumberland Vikings Basketball - Viking Enterprises, LLC - Cumberland, Ohio Viking Cagemen Figure In Auto Crash On SR 146
Returning from a practice session at Sarahsville last Thursday evening, six members of the Cumberland Viking high school basketball team escaped serious injury when the car in which they were riding swerved out of control, crashed thru a wire fence and struck a tree at the edge of a small creek.

Investigating patrolmen reported the accident occurred on SR 146, only a short distance from the Nobel-Guernsey county line.

It is reported the driver of the car, Richard Jordan, Cumberland high school sophomore, failed to negotiate a curve when the rear right tire blew out.

Other occupants of the care were James Dudley, James Holbert, Richard Jenkins, Kenneth West, and Gordon McDaniels.

Coach Jim Marks expressed some concern whether or not the accident could have had some serious repercussion with any one of his six starting cagemen. Obviously they all survived the near-serious ordeal with only a few bruises and bumps. The following night, the Vikings engaged the Byesville Falcons and lost by a close score to the host team, 46-43.

Cumberland School Robbed - Viking Enterprises, LLC - Cumberland, Ohio Cumberland School Is Robbed

Forrest Howell, school executive, is shown here checking the safe in his office at the Cumberland high school which was broken into and robbed last Friday night.

Mr. Howell said the thieves punched off the combination wheel of the safe, shown above, and made off with approximately $44.00. It was reported earlier that they got only $10.00 but the junior class had left $34.00 of their money in the safe Friday.

The robbery was discovered by Coach James Marks. Entrance to the building was gained by breaking out a window. It is believed the thieves left the building thru the door leading into the gymnasium, for it was that door Marks first noticed was not locked when he reported to the gym Saturday morning to check out some basketball material.

Guernsey county authorities who investigated the robbery reported that is was impossible to detect any finger prints. It is thought that those persons responsible for the break-in wore gloves to avoid any possible clue.
