I started first grade and went through 6th grade at the school building on the hill. Our class was ready to move to the high school building to be with the ‘big’ kids when they consolidated the school district and made the high school building into the elementary school. Needless to say we were really disappointed because we didn’t get to change classes and do all the things we had looked forward to as a 7th grader. We had the same teacher, Mrs. Joan Stevens for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Our classes consisted of Rachel Collins, Becky Mellinger, Wanda Snyder, Wanda Moore, Sammy Bay, Jerry Shaver, Larry Wickham, Larry Bailey, Marilyn Dingey, Carolyn Wickham, Ronnie Fish and Nancy Dailey.

The greatest thing about moving to the high school building was the inside bathrooms. Any of you that went to the old school, I’m sure remember the outside restrooms; one for the boys and one for the girls and women teachers. In between was the baseball field. The boy’s toilet was home plate and the girl’s toilet was 2nd base. We had a lot of fun and didn’t think it odd to go out in the cold or heat to use the restroom.

When we left Cumberland Elementary we went into the world where we had to learn to interact with the other schools that were now part of the Rolling Hills School District and had previously been our biggest competitors in basketball. We found out there was a whole big world out there and whether we liked it or not we were on our way.
